A vintage very large and very impressive English hand sewn cross stitch carpet of classical design - quite rare to find one of this size. Reminiscent of the French Aubusson carpets but this one is definately English. Features swags, flowers, roses and a central medallion surrounded by a geometric repeating patterned border. Colours are traditional muted pastel shades of taupe, cream, green, pink. The needlepoint is of wool and the canvas is a double weave 10 holes to the inch canvas.
The stitcher has left long lengths of wool at the back to prevent unravelling of stitches. There is a white felt lining attached to the back of the carpet.Taken from the floor of a small country estate house in the South of England. Probably stitched circa 1900 - 1950. It measures:- 12 x 9 feet - 4 x 3 yards - 3657 x 2743 cm. The whole thing must have taken for ever to make and is a rare survivor of a handmade needlepoint carpet - it is NOT a rug by any means! There does not appear to be any moth damage or broken areas where furniture has rested. One end seems to have faded where a window has let in light. The whole carpet is dusty and needs a clean. It does not smell of animals. The backing is slightly sticky where it has come into contact with the floor and needs stitching back in a few places (if it is kept). It has protected the actual fabric very well. There is no fraying to the edges of the carpet. Weighs up to 15 kilo when packed. Check out my other items.
