And a classic, a beautiful colour this one with lots of lovely areas of red bole and typically, a classic slim white painted slip Superb! By 19 & 1/2" With a depth of 3" in the corners.
This is a fabulously ornate frame, I sourced recently from a dealer in the U. It is uber-French in style and design, based on an ornate Rococo-cum-Louis swept design, yet also with a nod to the famous Montparnasse frame so, despite this frame not being French in origin, it is a fabulous and dramatic Gallic-style picture frame with considerable style and character, and one thing IS for sure, this will have been a very expensive frame in its time.. In style and appearance, being beautifully swept all along the highly-convoluted border, and the colour is to die for, we have a soft French Grey tone, with raised gilded highlights and a beautiful red bole coming through, although this frame doesn't have age (the label would suggest 09/02/2023) whether this may be a later addition, I do not know...
What I also like about this frame is that there is a pleasing deep groove that runs all around the edge of the frame, and everything is set up perfectly with a slim slip, also handpainted, which angles into the sight edge, having the effect of drawing your eye into the painting... There are lots of little areas of craqueleure, patently designed to look old and especially as stated before, designed to specifically emulate the famous. Montparnasse' frame, the originals of which hail from the Paris suburb after which they are named... Despite being somewhat ostentatious and ornate in style, it's also a frame of incredibly subtle contrasts, akin in some ways to an over-the-top opulent swept Louis frame, with such a wonderful'antique' gilt colourisation, there are some beautiful signs of craqueleur here and there as well as some fabulous yet ever-so-subtle gilded areas close to the sight edge that gleams beautifully in places as I hold the frame now in the light Montparnasse Style Frames The history of the Montparnasse frame is that many.Lived in the Paris suburb Montparnasse at the start of the 20th Century, materials were scarce & so these frames were designed by these artists from around 1908. (a simple Google search will tell you). & many were hand-carved & also painted by hand.
Entirely constructed by hand from a solid pine carcass. It is a fabulous super-strong construction. Beautifully painted with exquisite carved foliate border detail, the overall colour is a wonderful French honey gilt but there are darker sections to the carved peaks to resemble gilding and naturally some of the paint has flaked here and there revealing the shade of carved red bole underneath. The light wasn't great when I took the photos, so please take a good look at ALL of the images.
I would say that the colour and patina to each & every one of these individual frames is pretty much unique I often feel that these styles of frames work particularly well with contemporary artworks, be they semi-abstract landscapes, Impressionistic portraits, OR even Cubist still life paintings, this frame looks equally impressive displayed in a Landscape OR Portrait fashion. If you have any questions, please ask. Condition; with NO major losses that I can see, a couple of cracks in the gesso here and there BUT this, I believe is all part of the design, perhaps a few age-commensurate rubbings here and there, and a couple of minor losses to a back edge; together with the odd minor age commensurate ding to the border, but in truth nothing particularly noteworthy Super strong corners Age commensurate wear With.
