Vintage Glass, Silver Plate Hip Flask. A beautiful heavy glass antique hip flask with silver plate bayonet cap and base cup.
Removable silver plate base cup that is engraved H. To one side and blank to the other. Stamped to both top and base with the famous James Dixon Trade mark. The flask is in overall good condition with no chips or cracks, and the cap fits securely and is fluid proof. Dimensions: 5"(12.6cm) high by 3"(7.6cm) wide and 1(2.5cm) deep. Would make a beautiful gift for someone special. The firm of James Dixon made silver ware for over 200 years and became the major manufacturers of high quality ware in not only Sheffield but Britain.Founded in 1806 by James Dixon it became a partnership (Dixon & Smith) with Thomas Smith in 1811, Thomas Smith withdrew in 1823 when James's eldest son Frederick joined the business. The company moved to Cornish Place Sheffield in 1824 and became James Dixon & Son, in 1835 James second son James Willis Dixon joined the firm and it became James Dixon & Sons. James Dixon senior retired in 1842 and left the business to his three sons William, James and Isaac. The firm exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851, being awarded several prizes in different classes for silver and Britannia metal (these medals are currently on display at the Millenium gallery exhibition in Sheffield).
In the 1870s, the firm opened its first London showroom on Ludgate Hill. During the rest of the 19th Century James Dixon & Sons carried continued to become one of the finest Sheffield makers and winning many prestigous awards and honours, the famous trumpet and banner trade mark was granted in 1879. During the First World War, presses were installed to produce tin helmets which, after the War, were used to make pressings for gas lamp components. The business became James Dixon & Sons Ltd in 1920 and continues today.
