Shasta and the surrounding area. A profusely and beautifully illustrated tourist and sportsman's guide to points of interest in northern California and Oregon along and adjacent to the Southern Pacific Company's "Shasta Route, " the railroad between San Francisco, California, and Portland, Oregon. The Southern Pacific Company assumed control of the financially troubled Oregon and California Railroad and constructed the link over Siskiyou Summit in 1887, completing the route through northern California to Portland. Johnstone worked in the passenger department of the Southern Pacific Company for about eight years, writing and illustrating advertising copy for its publications. In 1893 he and William V.

Bryan founded THE TRAVELER, a San Francisco "illustrated monthly journal of travel and recreation, " promoting Pacific Coast hotels, resorts and travel, which he edited until his death in 1895. Condition: Remarkably good condition for its age. It shows light general wear from age and use, but is still structurally sound. Some creases, and some edgewear to cover. First page has some chipping at top edge and some staining.
