/ Isaac Hough, / 92 S. Large (13' x 10') and finely bound edition of an early American Catholic family Bible in the Douay Rheims Version with full annotations by Father George Leo Haydock. It is a distinct edition from the concurrently-published edition from England that had Haydock's annotations abridged by Father Husenbeth, in that this edition contains the full unabridged annotations, and contains a slight revision of the New Testament text by the American priests, Frs. It is the edition selected for modern reproductions by Catholic Treasures (now Loreto).
Bound in full leather with original gilt-ornamented covers and beveled edges. Later spine in six panels offset by raised bands and with original labels laid down. An extensive array of extra features including a Dictionary of the Bible, illustrations of Bishops, a full color section depicting the Stations of the Cross, color plates depicting the Parables, a Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, indexes and two cardboard photograph insert leaves. Color Presentation page, 11 full page engraved plates plus engraved general title, and full color frontispieces to each testament.
Loss of gilt to binding, and loss of leather to extremities, all but one family page (with writing) excised, clasps removed. Occasional interior paper tears with major repairs to two of the Stations of the Cross leaves and losses to cardboard insert leaves. Interior reflects age with browning, foxing, and fraying to moiré endpapers and preliminary leaves.
A flawed but sound copy of this historic edition.
