AN ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY BOVINE BONE CLUB CHESS SET - possibly JAQUES LONDON SET? This is a clean and beautifully carved 32 piece chess set which is complete and matching. It has been individually hand turned by skilled craftsman in the early 1800s in natural bovine bone and then stained or polished. They are turned in sections and then beautifully screwed together. It has a clean polished mellow bone patinated finish on the white side. The stained'cochineal' red side has minimal colour loss and The chessmen have been well looked after throughout their long life. They possess no real noticeable damage or defects, other than normal'aged' patination and natural bone markings, as you would expect. I think this set is a'Barleycorn' style or'Ropetwist' version, but it is crafted in bovine bone and will have been made prior to the time of the introduction of the wood turned/crafted world famous'Staunton' pattern in the year 1849. This chess set was made in an era when the cattle/meat trade was flourishing in London in the 1800's and, as a by product, there was ample supplies of cattle bone.

It is beautifully carved with ribbed bodies on the Royal Pieces with fine carved crown on the Kings. All the chessmen are all mounted on top of smooth baluster stems with circular vases. The King measures 100 mm/4" tall while the Base diameter = 32 mm/1.25", Queen = 93 mm tall while the Bishop measures. This set is in excellent condition for its age with no splits but there are a couple of repairs ie to the red castle and the white bishop has broken and will need to be repaired although the break is clean and it has a hairline to the base. This is a must for any chess player and is being offered at a reasonable price but offers are welcome.
