Up for sale is my early 19th. Century 8 key Boxwood flute, by Goulding & Co. This elegant instrument is in excellent original condition, full playing order, without cracks, damage or missing parts, with only the occasional mark commensurate with age and use visible. This is quite a remarkable state of preservation, considering this flute is over 200 years old. This attractively hued Boxwood flute is absolutely straight, without any warp or twisting. The pewtered keys are made in Sterling Silver, with the short keys fully lined in their blocks. Another interesting feature is the flyover shank for the low C key, which is tastefully engraved (see photo 9). This is a feature of early instruments, and is a stylistic carryover from 18th. As is the straight shanked long F key.
Each section is clearly stamped GOULDING & Co. This company was operating from 117, New Bond Street between 1804 - 1810. The flute speaks with a clear, sweet voice, and plays at A = 430 Hz. Intonation is good for this period, with the expected slightly flattened foot and F#. The flute is well balanced, and easy to handle. As ever, the pewter plugs benefit from a small application of light oil before use. This is an excellent example of a 19th. Century Boxwood flute, and one of the earliest I've come across featuring the full 8 key complement.
