We have similar Floral and Art Nouveau items, which would pair nicely with this piece, for sale this week. Listing description by: Angela A. Markings : Lion 925 sterling silver assay mark, Birmingham anchor mark, 1891 "r" date letter, partial unidentified "JB" maker's mark, and illegible mark on the back of the brooch, tested, and guaranteed.

Depth : 0.34 (including pin stem). Handmade during the Art Nouveau era in England, a rare piece of mourning jewelry. 925 sterling silver with 14k rose and yellow gold accents. The yellow and rose gold accents composed elegant scroll, floral, and foliate motifs. The back of the brooch contains a compartment which would have been used to hold the hair, photo, or other memento of a loved one.

Completed with an open'c' clasp, pin stem, and base metal hinge for secure wear. There was likely a glass covering present on the compartment in the back, which is now missing; this can be replaced by your local jeweler. There is some tarnish to the sterling silver, which does not affect wear. The price has been reduced to reflect this. This listing is for the item only.

This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large.

Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry.

Mourning Jewelry has been around for hundreds of years but became especially popular during the Victorian era. When Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria went into a state of mourning for over 40 years. She would often wear Black Memorial jewelry, Jet and Onyx.

With the public seeing this, it rose immensely in popularity and soon enough was a staple of the Victorian period. Oftentimes, mourning jewelry included a relic from the deceased.
