Up for sale from my collection is a beautiful early, English 4 key Boxwood flute made by Potter of London. This flute is in excellent condition without damage, cracks or warping.
The keys and block liners are made from solid Silver. Over the last 200 years or so the wood has matured to a lovely deep natural honeyed hue, something which can only be convincingly achieved by time. The three body sections are stamped POTTER LONDON, and the headjoint additionally reads, POTTER, JOHNSON'S COURT, FLEET STREET, LONDON. This stamping dates the flute's manufacture between 1785 - 1806. The flute is in full playing order, and is pitched at A = 430 Hz. This instrument speaks with a soft mellow tone, typical of these early English Boxwood flutes with unlined heads and small embouchure/tone holes. Intonation is as expected with a slightly flattened foot (- 20 cents) and A's and B's need to be lipped down a little. The F# is very slightly flat (good for a period instrument) and comes to tune with the short F. It is rare to see an early Potter with pre-patent flap keys, and this flute will make a significant historical contribution to any collection. The item "Antique Vintage Early English Wooden Boxwood 4 Key Flute By Potter In D" is in sale since Saturday, July 31, 2021.
