Notable Features : This pendant was handmade during the Retro period of the Art Deco era. The English pendant is made out of. 925 sterling silver in a gold wash and features a scene depicting a man fishing. The back of the pendant has been engraved with the initials "N. B" and is dated 1948-9.Sitting in the center of the pendant is the fishing scene which is made out of gold washed sterling silver and is incredibly detailed. Great care went into the creation of this scene, which shows a man standing on the banks of a body of water next to his fishing tackle amongst tall grass, the leaves of a tree overhead only just visible. Across the water, another shore can be seen with several trees adorning its bank. Each leaf on the trees has been etched into the sterling silver, as have the folds in the man's clothing.
Surrounding this beautifully detailed scene is an ornate sterling silver border which does not have a gold wash, allowing it to contrast sharply against the gold of the center scene. The border is comprised of scrolling lines and curved edges, giving this piece an elegant and regal design directly inspired by earlier Art Nouveau jewelry. Attached to the top of the pendant is a thick jump ring, allowing for secure wear of this heavy pendant. Due to its size, this piece can be strung on a necklace as a pendant or worn on a bracelet as a large charm. A unique piece of Retro history, this pendant would make an excellent addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to own this piece of history. This listing is for the item only. The Art Deco era is famous for being the "Gatsby" or "Roaring Twenties" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940.
Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Retro jewelry refers to pieces created in the 1940s and 1950s. This was a period during which jewelry designers were largely influenced by the changes stemming from World War II. These designs reflect an infusion of futuristic vision with elements inspired by preceding periods, encompassing a variety of gemstones, shapes, and materials. Materials used commonly in Retro jewelry are gold, gold alloys, and silver as the wartime put a restriction on the use of platinum. Designs can be masculine, geometric and modern, or softer, more feminine and floral. This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry.
